Forex Market Today: Majors Hold Their Ranges as Oil Swings and UK Inflation Runs Hot
With the Federal Reserve silent in its pre-meeting blackout and no major US data on the calendar, oil was once again the loudest market. WTI crude traded between 97.91 and 100.40 dollars a barrel and stood near 98.66 by mid-morning in New York, up about 80 cents, according to investingLive analyst Greg Michalowski, while Deutsche Bank, cited by FXStreet, noted that Brent had swung from about 112 to 106 dollars before recovering. The headlines behind the swings contradicted each other: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said indirect talks with Washington continue through Qatar and Pakistan and that Tehran’s proposal includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz if the US meets its commitments, while the Al Hadath network reported that Iran had rejected US demands, per investingLive. The πΊπΈ dollar absorbed it all quietly. The US Dollar Index edged up to the 101.75-101.80 area, recovering part of Tuesday’s drop to a three-week low just above 101.50, with the 10-year Treasury yield easing to about 5.11 percent. On rate expectations, FXEmpire analyst Arslan Ali cited the CME FedWatch Tool showing an 83 percent chance the Fed holds on 28 October and a 94 percent chance of at least one hike by December.
The πͺπΊ euro spent the day pinned. EUR/USD traded near 1.1220, capped just above 1.1260 on Tuesday and holding above 1.1200 for a third consecutive session, according to FXStreet analysts Eren Sengezer and Guillermo Alcala. France remains the weight on the single currency: the 10-year OAT yield reached 4.98 percent, its highest in 24 years, and the spread over German Bunds widened to 157 basis points, the widest since the 2009-2011 crisis years, per FXStreet, with the government preparing a large security operation ahead of Saturday’s protests and Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu saying curfews could be imposed where needed. “The bearish view on France will stay for a while longer,” Handelsbanken FX strategist Tommy von Bromsen said, as quoted by FXStreet. ING’s analysts, cited in the same coverage, wrote that the dollar “continues to trade with a soft undertone”, which has kept the pair from breaking lower. ECB President Christine Lagarde headlined a busy day of euro area speakers that also included chief economist Philip Lane, eight days before the ECB decides on rates.
The data of the day came from London. π¬π§ UK consumer prices rose 3.5 percent in the year to September, above the 3.4 percent economists expected and up from 3.1 percent in August, with core inflation at 2.8 percent and motor fuel inflation the highest since August 2022, according to the ONS figures reported by FXEmpire. π¬π§πΊπΈ GBP/USD still struggled to extend Tuesday’s climb above 1.3400, its highest since mid-September, and traded flat near 1.3370, per FXStreet, with FXEmpire’s Arslan Ali writing that the print strengthens the case for a Bank of England hike on 5 November, days after the 28 October Autumn Budget. πΊπΈπ―π΅ USD/JPY moved sideways near 158.00 as September Japanese exports rose 16.7 percent year on year, below forecasts, and Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said the government is coordinating closely with the Bank of Japan, per FXStreet. The Australian dollar was the session’s best performer, up about 0.4 percent after RBA Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser said inflation is running worse than the bank forecast, according to investingLive. Gold traded near 4,132 dollars an ounce.

On the πΊπΈ US Dollar Index, FXStreet analyst Haresh Menghani writes that the recovery lacks conviction below the 23.6 percent Fibonacci retracement at 101.90, with the cycle high near 102.92 above it and support at the 101.25 confluence of the 200-period EMA on the four-hour chart, then 100.76. A market that spends three days inside a narrow range while it waits on two central bank meetings is the setting we describe in our note on the investment process.

Forex Trading Glossary: Three Terms From Today’s Expresso
- Bollinger Bands: a volatility indicator made of a 20-day moving average with an upper and lower band set a set number of standard deviations away. FXStreet’s Lallalit Srijandorn uses the mid-line at 1.1252 and the lower band near 1.1115 to frame today’s EUR/USD range.
- Core inflation: the change in consumer prices excluding volatile items such as food and energy, watched by central banks as a cleaner read on underlying pressure. UK core CPI rose to 2.8 percent in September, part of the print that firmed Bank of England hike expectations today.
- Fibonacci retracement: horizontal levels drawn at set fractions (23.6, 38.2, 50 and 61.8 percent) of a prior price move, used to map where a correction might pause. FXStreet’s Haresh Menghani marks the 23.6 percent retracement of the dollar’s October slide at 101.90 on the DXY.
What’s Brewing for Tomorrow
The overnight session brings New Zealand’s third-quarter CPI at 23:45 CET tonight (17:45 New York), per LiteFinance’s weekly calendar, and Tesla’s quarterly results after the US close, a report FXStreet lists among the week’s main risk-sentiment inputs. Thursday itself is light: πΊπΈ US weekly jobless claims arrive at 14:30 CET (8:30 New York), followed by the Conference Board’s leading index at 16:00 CET (10:00 New York), according to Kiplinger’s calendar, which also notes the Fed blackout runs through 29 October, so no Fed speakers are scheduled. No πͺπΊ euro area release of comparable weight lands before Friday’s flash PMIs, and investingLive’s Greg Michalowski writes that with the calendar this thin, Middle East headlines remain the main driver for the oil-sensitive currencies.
