Forex Market Today: Iran Deal Reports Knock Oil Lower and the Dollar With It
The session’s direction came out of the oil market. Israel’s Channel 12 reported that a compromise brokered by Qatar and Pakistan had received American approval and preliminary agreement from Tehran, a plan said to include transferring the interest on 6 billion dollars of Iranian funds frozen in Qatari banks, according to FXStreet. WTI crude, above 100 dollars a barrel earlier in the day, dropped to about 95.65 on the report. The πΊπΈ dollar followed oil down: FXStreet analyst Joshua Gibson reported the US Dollar Index slipping to just above 101.50, its lowest since 1 October, before recovering toward 101.70 after a diplomat involved in the talks said reports that a deal was close were wrong. The 10-year Treasury yield fell about six basis points to near 5.08 percent, and September housing starts came in at 1.221 million against the 1.3 million forecast, per FXStreet, which also cited a poll of 100 economists in which 94 expect the Fed to hold at 3.75-4.00 percent on 28 October, while all 100 expect a hike in December.
The πͺπΊ euro was the main beneficiary, since cheaper energy eases the euro area’s import bill. EUR/USD rose about 0.35 percent to 1.1251 in American trading hours, according to FXStreet, recovering from Monday’s slide to 1.1223 on the French unrest. The French backdrop stayed heavy even as street protests eased after Monday’s curfews: ActionForex reported the 10-year OAT yield near 4.96 percent and the OAT-Bund spread widening to about 152.5 basis points, close to its early October peak, with parliament debating the revenue side of the 2027 budget and Moody’s review of France’s Aa3 rating due on Friday. “The worries in France are not going away anytime soon,” Handelsbanken FX strategist Tommy von Bromsen told Reuters. Germany added a soft note of its own: the ZEW economic sentiment index fell to 28.1 in October from 34.7, below the 30 economists expected, the first broad confidence reading since the unrest began, according to FXStreet.
The yen had its own story. πΊπΈπ―π΅ USD/JPY declined about 0.3 percent toward 158.10 after Japan’s 20-year government bond auction drew bids worth 5.84 times the amount sold, the strongest ratio since the bonds were first issued in 1987. “A strong signal that sidelined cash is finally coming back,” State Street senior fixed-income strategist Masahiko Loo told Reuters, adding that JGBs are becoming a relative haven from European political volatility. π¬π§πΊπΈ GBP/USD rose about 0.4 percent to 1.3350 after UK unemployment fell to 4.7 percent against a 5.0 percent forecast, per Reuters, with markets pricing roughly 93 percent odds of a Bank of England hike on 5 November, according to ActionForex. The Canadian dollar firmed too, as USD/CAD fell about 0.4 percent toward 1.4053 with implied odds of a Bank of Canada hike on 28 October jumping to about 83 percent from roughly 30 percent on Friday after Governor Tiff Macklem’s warning on oil-driven inflation, per ActionForex. In Beijing, the People’s Bank of China kept its Loan Prime Rates unchanged, as expected, per Reuters.
EUR/USD, DXY and USD/JPY: Technical Levels on the Radar
These are the technical levels named in Tuesday’s forex analysis across the financial press, reported here for information only. On πͺπΊπΊπΈ EUR/USD, TradingNews analyst Itai Smidt flags resistance at 1.1270, a level rejected four times this month, with support in the 1.1150-1.1160 zone and the 14 October low of 1.1113 below it, while DailyForex analyst Crispus Nyaga sees the pair stuck in a range under its 25-day and 50-day exponential moving averages until the Fed and ECB decide. On the πΊπΈ US Dollar Index, FXStreet’s Joshua Gibson notes the index has now given back about a third of its climb from the 9 September low near 98.60 to the 14 October high just under 103.00, with support near 101.60 and the 50-day EMA just under 101.00. On πΊπΈπ―π΅ USD/JPY, IC Markets’ daily technical outlook places the pivot at 158.88, first support at 156.42 and first resistance at 160.29.
